Is there a reason for everything?

Bad things happen to good people, and it can be hard to figure out why. Could it be it is hard to figure it out because there really isn’t a reason? Maybe the reason someone got sick or got fired isn’t because of something they did or didn’t do, or because it would make them have some big revelation; maybe there isn’t a reason – maybe it just happened.

I used to think everything happened for a reason, but I am not so sure anymore. I understand the thought process behind this; if there is a reason that something happened to someone, then I can continue to believe that it will not happen to me, because that reason does not exist in my life. If there is no reason behind something, then that thing could happen to me, right? I do not want to believe that bad things can happen to me, so I want to believe that if a bad thing happened to you, there is some reason behind it. But when I start to think that way, it starts to feel like I am blaming the thing that happened on the person it happened to – and I don’t think that is right.

I go round and round trying to figure this thing out, and I just can’t. Perhaps the reality is that all kinds of things happen to all kinds of people, and there is no reason. Maybe some things happen just because someone is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe things don’t happen to teach us a lesson, but there is still a lesson to be learned from everything that happens. That’s the best I can come up with right now.
