Government shutdown Part 2

So, by the time you read this it will be old news – at least I hope so. I just read that a deal has been reached to open the government for three weeks. I think that’s great – really I do; it is WAY past time to reopen the government. We should not be asking people to work for free, and despite what some rich people in this government have a hard time grasping, a government shutdown does, indeed, hurt people.  There are people out there who can’t afford their medicine, their rent or mortgage payments will be delayed, they can’t afford school or daycare tuition, and they are going without food. All because we have a person in the White House who acts like he is two years old, and is throwing a temper tantrum because he can’t have what he wants. Of course, what he wants is something that he promised Mexico would pay for, even though even the not-so-smart people knew when he said that that it probably wouldn’t happen. (The rest of us KNEW it wouldn’t happen.)

I think it is imperative that we pass some legislation that does not allow this to happen again. Holding government workers hostage over something that has little to nothing to do with them is beyond cruel – it is stupid. We are placing these people at risk of losing everything they have worked for, just because someone is pitching a fit.

I don’t know what the answer to all this is – but I do know that we better find it soon. The first step might just be to calm down the rhetoric – this is not about one side wanting open borders and the other side not wanting open borders. The disagreement is really about HOW to protect our borders, not IF to protect our borders. Let’s do this in a way that makes sense in 2019. Let’s use the technology that we have available to us now. We are also placing the country at risk, because of all the stress we are putting on government employees.

Congress, please get your act together and come up with some solution that will keep the government open beyond three weeks. And please do not give in to the whiner-in-chief, because if you do, this will just continue to happen.
