Beliefs

You have the right to believe in what you want to believe in – period. You do not have the right to force me or anyone else to believe in the same thing – period. If you take comfort from believing in an all-powerful god, then go for it; I would not dream of stopping you. If you take comfort in believing there is no god at all, that is within your rights as well. If you believe in a god who wears green tights and a red tunic and has feathers for hair, that is none of my business.

And neither is it any of your business what I do or do not believe in. I may believe in the same thing as you, or I may not. I am not particularly inclined to say what it is that I believe in. I am willing to have that discussion with people who are truly interested in knowing, and who are not trying to convert me to whatever they believe in.

Our country was clearly founded on the separation of Church and State. That never used to be in question, but it is now. We are not, nor were we ever, a monolithic people who all believe in the same thing.

There are people who believe that all paths, followed sincerely, lead to the same place. There are people who believe that only they are on the right path.

What is the truth? I don’t think we get to know that while we are still living on this plane. And I do think that people browbeating others into believing what they believe is not right.
